Status Update...

Not cool... just found out one of my systems was infected with a virus. What's even worse is that it was not detected by Microsoft's Security Essentials-- there was odd behavior on our network that I traced to a specific machine, and when Security Essentials didn't find anything I ran a Sophos A/V scan on it, and it found and quarantined the virus. Scary stuff... that machine has been disconnected from the network and shut down, and will be restored from an earlier backup and then scanned using Sophos before being re-connected. Paul Thurrott - Do I need to consider a new A/V solution?

I use the free version of AVG; have been using since 2008 version, no problems, and has been effective. They have a commercial version that adds in firewall and all that jazz, but this works well for virus/spy/adware, and for free...just my 2 pennies... :-)

Will do some research this weekend. Security Essentials has consistently scored better in independent testing than AVG in terms of threat detection (and performance, which is why I use it.) I won't use Symantec or McAffee because I'm not willing to give up that much in terms of system resources. Also, I need a solution that works on servers as well as desktops, which narrows my options a bit.
